Garden Route: Ostrich Farm

Our guide shows us what the egg looks like during various stages of development

the dark spot in the center is the yolk and by placing it on a light box you can see if it is fertilized

Betsey was the first ostrich we met at the farm

People line up to give Betsey kisses by putting a piece of grain in your lips. she then plucked it out!

Ostriches take 42 days to hatch and the parents look after them for over a year after hatching.

Crystal was a little afraid to ride an ostrich

Ostrich eggs are so tough you can stand on them!
