Kalk's Bay

Kalk's bay is a beautiful seaside town with white sandy beaches that seem to go on forever. it is also a fishing town and for lunch we ate fresh hoek (think haddock) by the wharf and saw seals playing while we ate lunch. as always, beautiful and sunny here

Africa Day 2

Today was our first full day of orientation here. But unlike Ithaca's it wasn't boring and we traveled to a really cool restaurant to eat some malaysian food, which is really common here. We were taught how to make samosas and then ate a delicious curry dish.

Being shown how to fold the dough

 attempting....

she would correct us if we did it poorly

It took her all of 2 seconds to fold one. it took us 5 minutes.

Frying the samosas!

the other side of Table Mountain

Devil's Peak

Notes:
South Africans drive on the left hand side of the road
A bottle of wine costs $3
We get to do 60 hours of volunteer work
Cape Town is a very mixed culture. there are many different groups including a large indian/malaysian influence
a train ticket costs $1
Afrikaans is like an easier to understand version of German
our neighbors say that they can tell who is an american girl on campus because she will have a large backpack on, a huge water bottle on the side of it and drink beer at a bar (south african girls generally don't drink beer)
